What is Toyota Smart Stop technology?

What does Toyota Smart Stop Technology do?

Toyota Smart Stop technology stops your Toyota vehicle if sensors detect unwanted acceleration. If you step on both the gas and brake pedals, the engine will stop and the chance of an accident will be reduced. When a driver accidentally steps on the gas while trying to brake, it is called a “pedal error.” This amounts to approximately 16,000 traffic accidents per year, and this technology can help prevent them.

How does Toyota Smart Stop technology work?

Under certain conditions, the Smart Stop Technology system will automatically reduce engine power to help stop the car. This system operates automatically at speeds above 5 mph and is activated when the driver simultaneously depresses the accelerator and brake pedals. For this technology to work, the gas pedal must already be opened more than one-third of the way and the brakes should be applied at the same time. This feature uses throttle-by-wire technology to reduce engine power via the vehicle’s computer.

This system includes intelligent logic control; therefore, the system will not engage if it is not needed. For example, the system will not turn on if you press the brake pedal before the accelerator pedal. This allows the drive to depress both pedals at the same time when starting up a steep hill. If the gas or brake pedal is blocked, this system is automatically activated.
