Last month, a 2-year-old in Detroit shot himself in the hand and shoulder with a gun found under his mother’s bed. Earlier this month, a 4-year-old in Georgia was fatally shot after finding a gun in his parents’ car. Unfortunately, these types of incidents are all too common. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were 573 unintentional gun deaths of children under 18 from 2015 to 2020. death.
As a country, we don’t have to live like this. Accidental shootings by children, like many other gun-related problems, are preventable. Three ways smart guns can protect communities
Gun violence in the United States is a public health crisis. In 2020, according to the CDC, more than 45,000 people died from firearm-related injuries, including about 2,280 people under the age of 17. Investing in firearms safety is critical to saving lives and reducing the flow of guns in the United States.
Specifically, three key issues can be addressed with smart guns: 1) accidental shootings by children, 2) gun theft, and 3) teen suicide.
Preventing accidental shootings by children
Every year, hundreds of children in the United States find their parents’ or loved ones’ guns at home and shoot themselves or someone in the household. Smart gun technology can prevent these tragedies by not allowing the gun to fire when the owner is not holding it. A smart gun equipped with biometric technology, for example, would require the owner’s fingerprint or palm to release the trigger.
Preventing the theft of weapons
According to a 2020 analysis by the Centre for American Progress, 1.8 million guns were stolen from individuals nationwide from 2012 to 2017, and an additional 53,900 guns were stolen from gun dealers. In many cases, stolen firearms are later used in crimes such as murder, assault and car theft.
Importantly, stolen guns are more than a loss to the owner; are a significant danger to communities across the United States. However, a firearm equipped with RFID technology or biometric technology would not be able to be used by anyone other than the owner, in addition to preventing accidental shootings, thereby eliminating the possibility of the weapon being used in further criminal activity.
Reducing juvenile suicide
Teen suicides in the United States have been on the rise since 2007. According to CDC data, 721 youth ages 10 to 17 died by suicide by firearm in 2020, a 10 percent increase from 2019. Thanks to technology that only allows Owners guns to use their firearms, smart guns can prevent teens from using firearms against themselves and help reduce teen suicide in the process.
