Sunscreen: PREVENT OR CAUSE SKIN CANCER?
Skin Cancer: Since the 1980s, mass marketing campaigns have promoted the message that we must protect ourselves from the harmful effects of the sun with sunscreen.
If you haven’t yet woken up to the truth about big brand sunscreens and why you should avoid them, it’s time to take a closer look.
For centuries, before the introduction of commercial sunscreens, there were actually very few cases of skin cancer.
The sun is a vital source of life on Earth and provides nourishment for human health. It supplies vitamin D to the liver, which is essential for optimal body function. And it helps prevent cancer such as prostate cancer, bowel cancer, breast cancer. Sunshine is also a key nutrient for overcoming emotional trauma and depression.
When you delve into the statistics, you soon realize that there is a compelling relationship between the increasing number of skin cancer diagnoses and the heavy promotion of chemical sunscreens that began over 40 years ago.
SKIN CANCER NUMBERS STILL
The statistics are shocking in Australia, for example, where sun smart campaigns have been promoted since the early 1980s.
According to the Australian Cancer Council website, two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70 and more than 750,000 people are treated for one or more non-melanoma skin cancers each year.
The per capita numbers are similar in other developed countries, where people have been inundated with advertisements designed to sell commercial sunscreens over the past four decades.
WHAT CAUSES SKIN CANCER?
The sun itself is not the cause of skin cancer.
What causes cancer is processed, packaged and chemical foods and a lack of fresh, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables in your daily diet, grown seasonally in the temperate zone where you live.
In addition, there is increasing evidence to support the carcinogenic dangers of chemical sunscreens. A recent study by the Environmental Working Group found that more than 75% of 2,000 sunscreens, covering 257 brands, contained toxic chemicals.
The study also noted that “…some ingredients in sunscreen are absorbed into the blood and some have toxic effects. Some release skin-damaging free radicals in the sun, some act like estrogenic and disrupt hormones, and some can cause allergic reactions and skin irritation.
TOXIC AND HARMFUL CHEMICALS
If you see any of the ingredients listed below in your sunscreen, you should do some research on these chemicals before you continue to apply them to your skin.
Because your skin is cytoplastic (like a sponge), it absorbs whatever you put on it into your bloodstream. Which means if you use a sunscreen that is loaded with harmful chemicals, it will add to the chaos in the body.
Here is a list of chemical ingredients commonly used in sunscreen products that should be carefully considered before using these products:
Para aminobenzoic acid, Octyl salicylate, Oxybenzone ,Cinoxate ,Di oxybenzone Phenyl, benzimidazole, Homovalvate Menthol, anthranilate ,Octocrylene ,Methoxycinnamate, Parabens.
SUNSHINE FOR HEALTH
One of the biggest health challenges we face as a society is raising awareness against the back drop of misinformation and propaganda that is broadcast over the airwaves as part of everyday life.
Unfortunately, the medical world does not prescribe sunlight as a health remedy, although it should; especially when you consider that it can play a significant role in helping us avoid and even cure many common diseases.
Most people today need more exposure to the sun, not less, to prevent poor lighting, depression and weakened immunity.
The key is to respect the sun, but not avoid it.
Get your fix in the morning before the intensity increases in the middle of the day.
Whenever you can, expose as much of your face and body to natural sunlight for at least 15-20 minutes. This will help to not only nourish your body with vital immune-supporting nutrients, but also your brain with feel-good molecules that help stimulate emotional well-being, happiness and joy.
NATURAL ALTERNATIVES to sunscreens
If you have fairer skin and want to go out in the heat this summer, there are safe, natural alternatives to chemical sunscreens.
Vegetable oils that contain natural sun protection factors (SPF’s) are best, including:
Red Raspberry Oil –
Contains high levels of essential fatty acids omega 3 and omega 6 in addition to antioxidants and natural vitamin E. Has a natural SPF between 28 and 50 and strong anti-inflammatory properties;
Carrot Seed Oil –
Loaded with antioxidants, this is a vegetable oil that has a natural SPF of 30-40. Carrot seed oil is an essential oil with aromatic properties and a high vitamin A content.
